History

Who'd have thought it from days long ago

Many years ago, the village Inn 'The First and Last' was the building adjacent to this property and is now known as 'The Old Post office'. One day the owner of this house decided to apply for a licence to open his own Inn, nothing happened for a very long time until one day a letter arrived granting the licence for the new Inn.

The new landlord was so delighted and surprised that he stood outside this porch holding the letter and shouting 'Who'd Have Thought It' the name he appropriately chose for his new Inn. The excellent painting by Alex Bowyer over this same famous porch depicts this scene being enacted. In the background standing in his doorway is the landlord of the first and last glowering at his new rival while his wife walks back through the doorway in disgust, meanwhile the villagers gather round to discuss this exciting event.
